Zinetober 2022
I've never participated in a daily art challenge before, and I didn't expect it to be so difficult. I generally have a daily practice habit anyways but there isn't an expectation of finishing something, just writing or drawing and thinking about the project I am working on that day. For me creating the idea and text wasn't too hard, it was doing all of the publishing work that was difficult. For example I would draw my zine, but then filming it and posting it to Instagram would take almost as long as making the zine. I had only been making zines for a few months at that point (and I haven't even been doing this a year yet). What energized me and kept me going was the creative community around me. Looking at all the posts under the zinetober hashtag was so much fun! And there were so many each day that I could barely read them all (but in a good way not an overwhelming way) like going into a large candy store. I made several good friends and joined a discord group for the first time.
Exhaustion doesn't begin to describe how I felt when I was finished. Thank goodness I had a previously scheduled week of vacation at the end of October to finish up. It definitely wasn't a restful vacation...

Prior to zinetober I mostly wrote flash fiction prose. With more limited time I decided to create a poem minizine each day, then pared it down even more to an image and a poem. Even a minizine requires a cover, back page, and three pages inside. I learned how to use Canva to create digital collages and once I got over the tech hurdle, I really enjoy that art form. Physical collage not so much. You make a mess then need a place to store all the magazines, books, etc. It has been a bit of a stretch to go back to prose, but I am getting back in the swing of it and completed several new volumes of Eureka County Tales.
I would love to go to the DCAZ fest one day but it is all the way across the country. Time to save my pennies.
