About Me
My name is Annie Fraser and I make zines! I chose Lady Rogue Press for my website name for two reasons:
I love playing Rogues in Dungeons and Dragons! Being invisible and shanking someone from the darkness is awesome. A close second to the damage I can deal is that I can do just as much (or even better, to be honest) as the spell slingers in my adventuring party. Sneak Attack FTW!
My very first zine, Eureka Tales Vol 1: Tom and Sally, was inspired by the 1920s feel of H.P. Lovecraft's stories. In that decade women made great strides in independence and personal growth. They did Shocking (for the time) Things so I could be able and safe enough to do my own Shocking Things. I could imagine myself in that time, pushing boundaries with my writing and being part of an eccentric rich woman's outrageous entourage spending lavish weekends at someone's estate (I am looking at you, Vikingsholm). Like Mary Shelly perhaps I could have been spending the summer at Vikingsholm and out of a dare I would try to write the best novel amongst the group of writers lounging about the house. Of course I would win and my novel would evoke strong feelings about the terrors plainly visible through Lake Tahoe's legendary clear blue water. That kind of person would surely be a Lady Rogue!
I am greatly influenced by history:
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction which can inspire fiction in turn. Seeing things from another perspective is refreshing. I love reading old periodicals online such as my local newspaper and various magazines. Some of it is so bonkers, like using Radium on objects. Other things could easily be printed today such as how to save money on food by making meat stretch further or even meatless meals. In fact, I have been inspired by a 1920 edition of a Good Housekeeping cookbook to write a perzine describing my experience making those old recipes. It is in my to do list. I will get to it one day, I swear! I think the first one I will try is what they call a "raspberry vinegar" drink. It sounds more like a salad dressing than a drink.
